YELLOW, is motivated from Robert Yeo’s poem, “Those in Urban Yellow”. This selected writing speaks of how we should not take the greenery around us for granted, despite the vast number of heavily landscaped and curated parks in Singapore. Alas, there is at least hope for our future generations to appreciate “nature” presented before us today. This artwork seeks to engage viewers actively and encourage them to not only cherish the “now”, but to also, in the near future, share the responsibility of upkeeping this sometimes perceived “given”.
“And yet, some of your young opt out, niggling,
‘You are not green enough,’ They love, (you know),
Parks where spring contrives to give to green
A shine that does not yellow easily.
~
Few, few don’t know that green can be greener,
Or yellow, yellower. If we cannot choose,
Entirely, which flowers will grow wild on our soil,
We can, at least, graft blossoms for new homes.”
- Excerpt from Robert Yeo’s Poem – Those in Urban Yellow, 2012
YELLOW encourages people to look beyond today and anticipate a warm and positive post-pandemic future.
A visually impactful yellow skyline coupled with excerpts from “Those in Urban Yellow” will hopefully run a parallel or be symbolic of an irony to the visuals in the nature space. This will in turn highlight deeper meanings behind the written text, encouraging thoughts about looking at our home and our garden city we all enjoy today, in a different light.
